How to Achieve Smooth, Shiny, Frizz-Free Hair

Tired of seeing a halo of frizz around your head, no matter how you attempt to style your locks?

Frizzy hair can be incredibly frustrating to deal with, often seeming to have a mind of its own. The good news is that Evalectric is here to help you tame that frizz to achieve a smoother and shinier finish. Read on as we share our top secrets behind frizz-free hair.

What Causes Frizz in the First Place?

Ever wondered why your hair is frizzy in the first place?

It all comes down to dryness. When your strands lack moisture, hair cuticles open up in an attempt to capture more moisture from the environment around you. This is why it’s harder (but certainly not impossible!) to achieve frizz-free hair in a humid climate – there’s so much more moisture in the air around you for your hair to pull in.

This is why the key to frizz-free hair lies in giving your hair the moisture that it needs, and then helping it to retain that moisture.

The Steps to Follow For Frizz-Free Hair

So, what do you need to do to quench your strands and prevent them from frizzing up? Here are our top tips:

Trim Away Split Ends

It’s always best to start with a clean slate, and this means having any split ends cut away. Due to how thin and brittle they are, split ends frizz up very quickly. Plus, there’s no way to repair split ends – the only way to get rid of them is to cut them off.

Don’t be tempted to skip this step because leaving your split ends in place will only cause those splits to travel up your hair shaft. Sure, it may currently only be the ends of your hairs that are splitting but, over time, you’ll soon see splits in your mid-lengths and higher. This will make your frizziness so much worse. As soon as you notice any fraying at all, a trip to your hair salon is needed.

Wash and Condition With Hydrating Products

Shampoo-Conditioner

Giving your hair the moisture that it needs begins in the shower. After all, hair is at its most permeable when it’s wet, making this the best time for a dose of hydration.

Unfortunately, many hair care products, particularly shampoos, dry out the hair. To counter this, look for products containing hydrating ingredients. Argan oil, a popular ingredient in hair care products, is a good one to look out for. It’s exceptionally rich in fatty acids, which the hair needs in order to remain moisturized. Studies also show that it leaves the hair feeling more elastic, which ultimately, will leave it looking stronger and healthier.

This is why argan oil is the key ingredient in the Evalectric Moisturizing Shampoo and Moisturizing Conditioner. Both products contain it, attesting to their hydrating capabilities.

Avoid Using Hot Water on Your Hair

Do you ever find yourself turning up the temperature while you’re standing under the shower, enjoying the heat that envelopes your body?

As satisfying as that may feel, it’s not doing your hair any favors. As we mentioned, the key to frizz-free hair is keeping your hair hydrated and moisturized, which hot water works against.

Hot water strips away the protective oils that coat each strand of hair. It also dries out the skin on the scalp. A dry scalp means dry hair, which will prevent you from fighting your frizz.

While you don’t need to shiver under frigid temperatures, keep your showers lukewarm rather than hot, especially when you’re washing your hair.

Switch to Microfiber

Now that we’ve covered your hair-washing habits, let’s talk about your hair-drying technique.

First things first – your towel. Most people use regular terrycloth towels due to their absorbent properties. However, there are other materials that are actually even more absorbent than terrycloth, with microfiber being one. Switch from terrycloth to microfiber and you’ll be able to remove excess moisture from your hair so much faster.

What’s the hurry? The longer your hair remains wet, the more damage it will undergo. This is down to how the hair shaft swells when it’s wet, making it more prone to splitting and breaking. This then makes it even harder for the hair to retain moisture, giving the hair a rough and frizzy finish.

Save Your Strands From Friction

Even with microfiber, you should never rub your towel over your hair. Roughing it up in this way not only encourages hair cuticles to stand tall instead of lying flat, but it also encourages breakages since the hair is at its most fragile when it’s wet. Both result in fluffy frizz.

If you want frizz-free hair, you’ll need to be gentle with your strands. Rather than rubbing the moisture away, gently squeeze it out, working through your hair in small sections.

Of course, friction doesn’t come solely from towels. Other materials that your hair comes into contact with on a regular basis could also be contributing to friction and frizz, such as your pillowcase. If you sleep on cotton, switching to a silkier material will help to keep frizz to a minimum, placing you one step closer to frizz-free hair.

Lock in Moisture While Your Hair is Damp

Hair Serum

As we mentioned earlier, damp hair is very permeable. This means that the best time to give your strands an extra dose of moisture is while they’re damp.

There are many products out there that are designed to do just that, from leave-in conditioners to creams. However, hair serums are often the best choice. Their lightweight nature means that they don’t weigh the hair down too much or leave it looking greasy. Instead, they simply provide a burst of hydration that leaves the hair looking smooth and sleek.

If you don’t yet have a hydrating hair serum, the Evalectric Hair Serum won’t let you down. Featuring aloe vera leaf extract and vitamin E, it’s an exquisitely moisturizing formula that will immediately give your hair a glossier finish.

Dry With a Diffuser

Pro Beauty Dryer

Hairdryers are notorious for how they toss the hair around, leading to friction and frizz. This is why, if you opt for a blow dry at your hair salon, your stylist will always use a hairdryer that has a diffuser on the nozzle.

This way, rather than the air blasting out of the hairdryer at every angle, it’s much more focused. Point the nozzle downward while you dry and you’ll be encouraging your hair cuticles to lie flat. Once your hair is dry, it will look significantly smoother and less frizzy.

If your current blow dryer didn’t come with a diffuser, it’s time to upgrade to one that does. Evalectric’s Pro Beauty Dryer comes with two, enabling you to really customize your blow dry.

Know When to Use Your Blow Dryer’s Cool Shot Function

Speaking of blow dryers…

Most models these days come with a cool shot button. If you’ve never used this, you’re missing out!

The purpose of it is to quickly cool the hair down, which allows it to set. If you follow our tips above when it comes to your drying method, following up with a shot of cool air will allow you to lock down all of those flat hair cuticles. This will keep the appearance of frizz at bay for so much longer.

Turn Down the Temperature When Heat Styling

Classic Styler Ocean Blue

The use of heated styling tools can be a great way to achieve frizz-free hair. Using a hair straightener, for example, will enable you to flatten all of those frizzy strands and force them to lie flat.

However, as we mentioned earlier, heat can damage the hair, exacerbating frizz. A heat protectant product, such as a spray or a serum, will help to prevent this but, if you want to keep the appearance of damage and dryness to a minimum as much as possible, keep the temperature of your heated styling tools low when you’re using them.

How? Many heated styling tools now come with a temperature dial, enabling you to pick the perfect amount of heat for your hair. If yours doesn’t, it’s time to swap to one that does.

Take Evalectric’s Ocean Blue Classic Styler as an example. Not only can you choose your heat level but it also comes with negative ion technology. This seals the look of hair cuticles, contributing to a frizz-free finish.

Smooth Away the Look of Frizz With a Straightening Brush

Orange Straight Brush Styler

Another styling tool worth having if you’re hoping for frizz-free hair is a straightening brush. These look just like regular hairbrushes but plug them in and they’ll heat up. Run them through your strands and they’ll have a gentle straightening effect. Your hair won’t end up poker straight in the way that it would if you had used a flat iron, but it’s enough to smooth down the surface of your hair to give it a sleeker and less frizzy appearance.

The best part is that straightening brushes are so quick and easy to use. You won’t need to dedicate an extra 30 minutes to styling your hair as just a few run-throughs should be enough to calm even the frizziest-looking mane.

Touch Up Stray Strands

Extreme Hold Hair Spray

What should you do if you’ve just spent ages crafting an immaculately complex hairstyle, only for it to start frizzing up?

There’s a simple solution, but you’ll need a clean mascara wand or toothbrush for it. Give your chosen bristled tool a couple of spritzes with a strong hold hairspray, such as the Evalectric Extreme Hold Hair Spray. Then, run your mascara wand or toothbrush over any frizzy areas, combing the frizz down. Thanks to the tight bristles of these tools, they do a great job of locking individual frizzy hairs into place.
